depending on the dsl service and how the xbox is configured - u may need a network bridge to connect directly to the modem

if you enter a router between the 2 boxes you should be fine

yeah a lot of todays broadband modems are useless when it comes to re-claiming an IP. leave the xbox in, and pull the power cable from your modem, leave it out for 30 seconds and plug it back in.

how does your computer get online?

Even cheaper and quicker than MMC's suggestion of a network bridge would be get your hands on a crossover cable.
Any network or tech geek should have one hanging around.

Of course as indicated by another, you do need to power down both boxes and do a hard reboot to reconnect.
