So, though, I've wanted to avoid building an AR, my budget isn't going to allow it.

We can debate about which is the best AR lower to buy, but which ones to avoid? I don't want to see what seems a good deal and then end up with one requiring far more tweeking than my small skill can do.

Any brands to avoid for the uppers?

If your building from parts kits stay away from Rock river arms.. I know Im going to get flamed for this but after building a few AR-15's on Rock river I have become to hate them. There geat dont get me wrong but there so damn tight! on my AR-15 pistol and most others I had to shave down the upper recever parts so the rear pin would fit in without a hammer. Other than that Olympic's are alright... I stick with DPMS and Bushmaster. I love Rock rivers rifles its only striped lowers.

Heres my AR-15 pistol where I had to mill the upper to fit.

As for uppers, Olympic arms range... Some of there newer ones are not as bad as there old ones but its best to stay away...
Anything else is good, I use Model1 for most of my uppers.

Rguns.net has alot of AR lowers and lower assemblies. You can get a full A2 DPMS assembly for about 199.00

Go get a shotgun news and you will see that Rguns sells more than that. They have DPMS and Stag Arms for sale in their ads.
