I'm starting a rifle disassembly project and a vise would make my life much easier. What have you guys used that works well? It would be nice if I could use it for pistols too, but that's not a deal breaker. Same goes for using it as a shooting rest - nice, but not critical.

I use the MTM gun vice and the Tipton best vice.

I like the storage setup on the MTM's you have trays and individual slots for rods, cleaning supplies,tools and spare parts.

The Tipton is great for handguns and break open long guns since it has a center support and the butt support is a clamp so you can just tighten itup on a pistol grip and holds it solidily. The tipton also has storage area but the setup isn't as convient as what MTM has.

Neither of these is made to shoot off of.
