You're on a small Island in the pacific with your family and friends... You've rented a yacht and sailed to a very remote spot in the pacific where everyone is having a GREAT time. You have enough supplies to last you a month although you intend to stay for only 2 weeks. It's paradise... White beaches, lazy waves crashing on the beach... Hills and mountains (picture the island from the film "Castaway").

You're sitting at the beach and happen to have high power binoculars, and are scanning the horizon when you notice a decent sized boat/ship coming towards your little secluded Island, and on this boat, you see men carrying AK-47s, knives, and other random weapons. It is clear that their intent is to kill/rob/kidnap you you (modern day pirates). Since your binoculars are so powerful, you have time to get your family and friends to safer ground while you plan to stop this threat.

This is where the fun begins. Your family is safe as long as these modern day pirates don't get past a certain point on the beach. Magically, you can spawn ANY rifle in the world, with ANY accessories that you want it to have. You are given 200 rounds of ammo to be used in whatever fashion you want. You are given 3 magazines if you rifle accepts magazines. (hi-caps, if they exist for that specific rifle)

What would your choice of rifle/accessory, and what actions would you take in this situation?

Barrett 50 BMG

2 or 3 rounds to their engines = dead in the water.
2 or 3 rounds toward assholes on the deck = motivated to go elsewhere
10 or more rounds below the water line into the hull in a tight group (i.e. 15') = rats on a sinking ship

I'm with Janq on this, but in a slightly different way. With 200 rounds, I'm going with a tripod mounted Browning M2 50 cal machine gun.

Don't even let them get to close to land.

im with janq

i would rather done in 10 well placed shots than 200

you would totally give away your position

As well as waste all your ammo not knowing if supporters are enroute or on top of you only coming from a different direction with aid of concealment
.
Also one will have to account for the property damage and persons killed to local authorities.
It's alot easier to explain away 10 or 15 shots toward if not to their bow than it would be justifying a WWII style ammo dump into the target.

I didn't say that it would be one big burst. The M2 has enough control that an experienced operator can fire one shot at a time.

If the issue is unknown reinforcements, I'm going to suggest that a burst of heavy automatic fire will scare off any supporting elements. Pirates don't want stand up fights - they'll leave to find easier targets.

And if the area is so lawless that it has pirates in the first place, how do you know the "authorities" aren't in league with them? Were you planning on firing on a vessel and then waiting for the cops to show up?

Trying to put accurate shots on a moving target especially a boat will be extremely difficult,

I would go with a surpressed M1a NM, pop them as they waded in the shallow water. The would be moving very slowly and would not have cover.

No I would not wait for the cops to show up, in fact I'd most probably have not chosen to leave my family on some island of unknown safety and set out on my own with no backup to take on approaching armed multiples. I would have most probably chosen to sail/motor away forth with with advantage of great distance and time thanks to my super powerful binocs distance seeing powa.

But to play along if stuff did go down as proposed I would after surviving fully expect to file a report with the US Consulate of the country I'm in at a minimum and to contact the countries authorities if not their local coast guard. I would very likely not contact the local police as a first step whilst in a foreign country.

But it does raise an interesting basic question: how do you deal with obvious threat in a clear position? Overwhelming force or precise force?

And you're right - the safest option is escape, not confrontation.

is that a vulcan? you would scream through 200 rounds in less then 4 seconds if it was spinning at speed. maybe 6 if it was at a dead stop.

MAKE EM COUNT!

i would probably go with Janq on this one as well. i would take a high caliber long range rifle and disable the boat. but, your also assuming that JUST because there are half a dozen shady looking fellas on a boat, holding assault rifles that they don't mean well. i think i would have a serious moral objection to firing on a boat of people who have shown no hostile intent. yeah, of coarse there is a 85%+ chance that they dont mean well. buuuut.... *shrugs* i duno. if it was my family and friends i would probably bite the proverbial bullet and take one for the team. but damn i would feel really fuckin conflicted about it.
