I sold a 40 one to a friend and they are good for defensive to abotu 10 yards. hard as hell to hit with past that.

recoil is sharp as can be expected. I dont like the feel of it at all, but I dont like the fullsize either.

I have the subcomp in 9mm. It shoots fairly well out to 10yds. I like the grip angle better than Glocks. 40cal will have a much sharper recoil.

Hey I'm the guy Adler sold the .40 sub to. Like he said its a belly gun and your not gonna hit much farther than 10 yards. I have to agree with Makorov on the grip angle, its much better than the glocks and with the extended mag its a damn comfortable gun. I can't say much on the recoil cuz this is the only .40 I've ever shot but it is way less than my Witness P .45

I could keep all my shots well on paper at 25yds with my G26. I had pearce plus extensions on the mags. Could not stand having my pinky finger hanging off. The real trick was trying to group at 7-10 yds. with my Kel tec P3AT. Now that thing was tiny.

I couldn't care less how well it groups at 75 feet. If the bad guy is that far away, I have a chance to run/hide which means I don't have a legitimate reason to shoot at him.

I do care about how intuitive it is to handle as well as point/shoot viablity. I'm acceptable point/shooting with my 1911. Bad guy would probably die. I need something smaller though.

With the fullsize mags and extension its much easier. However I hate the feel of the XD both fullsize and compact so it just does not point well for me, thats why I had a hell of a time at 10 yards with the regualr compact mags.

I shot the subcompact 9mm XD and was able to hit 3" groupings at 12 yards with ease (8 rounds)... Not as accurate as my XD-40 in 4.25" trim, but it's still a nice little pistol. Though I'm more accurate with my G27 (which is chambered in .40) than the 9mm XD... I think this is due to grip angle however... I really prefer the grip angle of Glocks than I do XDs (XD has the 1911 grip angle, Glocks are angled back further).

It's a great pistol and will NEVER fail you, which is to be expected. Besides, you can't go wrong with a Croatian pistol! :D
