First I'd like to say that I am already a member of this forum and that this is a new username to hide my identity. Moderators please respect the privecy. PLEASE.

I was riding my toward one of the well know trail heads in my city... In order to get to the trail head you have to have to ride through a pretty dark parking lot. It was about 8pm, so it was getting dark, I was trying to make it home before it got too dark. Anyway, So as I cruise through the parking lot some guy in a white shirt jolts at me, grabs my arm and brings me to the groud. Toook me a second to reazile what was happenining. My feet were still clipped into the pedals, and all I could hear is "Take his bike:, "Kick his ass!:.... Alll within those moments I was yelling "Calm down, you got the wrong guy!". THey weren't phased, one guy looked like he had a bat, or a stick, or something, the other three were bent on stealing my bike (which was quite expensive). The only other option I could think of to end this situatuion was to pull out my Glock 27, One round sent waves through everyone. Almost as time had stood still, in a panic they all took off running, I was left there with a pistol in my hand, a scrape on my shoulder, and my bike laying on the ground. I aimed for a giant compost heap, I had no intent on shooting anyone of them. I got back on my bike and BOOKED HOME faster than I ever hace,

Sorry, I can;t reveal my real name here, but I had to share that with you guys. Probably one of the craziest thinks to ever happen to me. Feel free to post this on other furoums. Teach these guys a lesson!

Damn man, good to hear you're okay!

Wish CA had a friiggin CCW law . :p
+1 to a CCW.

Did you draw your glock as you fell in some instance of uber-adrenaline, or did you manage to get it out after you hit the ground? I'm assuming you were doing some single-track riding.... where do you keep your pistol when you do that? Good to hear you're safe... good call on not actually shooting those punks too.
Todd
Holy crap!

I bet that compost pile never bothers you again though!

j/k.

Glad you are safe, man. +1 for not being a victim.

So you missed?
No, he hit his target...which was the compost pile at which he says he aimed.

Thank goodness you came out okay as this could have gone south real quick even as armed.
Upgrade your pedals to very quick to release Egg Bros. or as I use on both my road & mtn. bikes Time 'ATAC'pedals.
It's a safety item as you experienced.

I too am curious as to where you carried as I've been trying to figure out a good system for months now toward cycling.
Additionally do you plan to call the police to report the discharge or go back during the day (with support) to retrieve your spent round & casing from the scene?

As forhiding your online identity thats a smart move and I'msure Bruce & Mikki will honor that.
Another case of CCW FTW.

Rofl. He doesn't need to get new pedals... you can get out of any clipless just as fast as any other. Quality varies, but exit(un-clip?) speed will not make a difference in your safety.

Oh and as I said earlier... how were you carrying??? I've been trying to think of it since this thread, and have come up with nothing that sounds safe/smart at the same time.
Todd
For future reference, you didn't purposely miss. Fearing for your life while already on the ground you pulled the gun and yelled at them to stop. They continued to struggle with you gun in hand and that caused the discharge which then scared them off. With the immediate threat gone you holstered the pistol and rode to the nearest phone to file a report with the police.
Just curious, did you report this to the local cops?

Uh no, not really.

The Time 'ATAC' have a wider range of relaease actuation than most other/average clipless pedlas in addition to a good amount of float too.
The Egg. Bros. pedal is unlike convetional clips is uber easy & quick to clip out of too. One can clip out of these very quickly even as you're falling without getting trapped under the bike. In the case of the ATAC's, which again I actually own and have for years now, when the foot is not applying pressure/pull to the clip it partially declips itself and with just a slight bit of twist to the heel your fott come right out of the pedal base.
Go to your local store and try a pair, you very likely will be surprised.

My ATACs have save my ass more than once during a fall on road and off.
If dude had had these he'd have been able to get his feet detached from the pedals & back very quickly even while on the ground and on his side/back.

geesh...glad you are alright...
Hey guys.

Thanks for all the support.

To answer some questions. I was wearing a semi-large jacket since it was pretty cold outside and dark... I wasn't on a trail yet, I was in transit. I was in a parking lot that leads to the trail.

When I fell, I'm glad I stayed in the pedals because that was the only thing keeping them from taking my bike. One guy was tugging at my bike (I have a $3000+ bike) and the other dude was pulling me. I reached into my pocket after yelling a few warnings, pulled out the pistol which I was hoping would scare them off... Gave that about a second, and when they didn;t stop assaulting me, I aimed for the compost pile and fired off a round, Right then they stopped and ran like crazy.

I thought about shooting them since one dude had a bat in his hand... if he would have came at me with the bat, I would have fired into his leg or sometthing. The problem with me concealing a weapon is that I dont have a CCW permit. My state doesn't allow it. I don't plan on shooting anyone unless my life is in danger, and at this point it didn't seem as though my life was in danger. It looked like they wanted my bike and to maybe rough me up a bit. Not worth me going to jail.

I didn't pick up the spend shell because I couldnt find it and I was in a HUGE rush to get the hell out of there. Those guys aren't going to call the cops, thats for sure, and I don't plan on it either.

Thanks for all your support guys.

PS: I kept the pistol secured in my pocket, not chambered

Damn it man, damn it!!!!

Yet another example and instance of a person in a non-CCW state that saved himself from criminal activity by he himself comitting a criminal offense.
This is just plain stupid that all states do not have a CCW allowance.
Folks don't have to carry if they choose not to but to disallow a person who wishes to have a basic right to defend their life if not property, thats just not right and moreover a disservice to the public at large.

I don't know who you are but I'm really glad for you and your family that everything worked out as it did for the better.
Smart move shooting at the compost pile rather than an attacker as per your singular and very unfortunate legality situation.
Years ago I too used to carry illegally only because the area I lived in (DC) did not and still does not support CCW or for that matter even possesion of a firearm for any purpose.

BTW, your life was "in danger", atleast as per VA and MA definitions toward legal application of deadly force. Same similar applies to other states that support CCW.

I just saw this from nasioc...

That's damn crazy...

I'm proud that you had clips... if you didn't, your bike could have been pulled away from you and off into the wild... they sound like the only reason you still have a bike.

I like to mock Daniel for having clips... because the other night he tried to fake a crash to screw with me... he wound up going down because he couldn't unclip his feet in time... LOL

Congrats on defending your life.

I spent three years working(and the four years before that loitering) at my local bicycle shop. While I agree that the ATACs are amazing pedals... they really don't make that much of a difference for dis-mounting. I've ridden the eggbeater pedals, Time's, a BUNCH of different SPD pedals... and when it comes down to it, there are two things that REALLY make a difference:
1. Weight(which I don't care about enough to purchase new pedals over, hence why I've never purchased anything above the SPD line)
2. Feel. How they click in, how they feel once you're in(float, ability to rotate/range of motion once in).

If I had as much money as I wanted to throw around, I would for sure have some eggbeaters on my mtn bike and some Time's/LOOKS on my road bike.

I agree they are great pedals... but I really don't think it will make squat of a difference when falling. In fact... I know many people who have chosen to stay away from higher-end pedals because they tend to be more difficult to clip out of. (some people do just suck at adjusting the tension on their clips though)

For one, I'm glad I stayed clipped in, I wanted to stay clipped in... I could have very well clipped out, but I knew they were trying to get my bike right when the first guy put his hands on me. It all happened so fast, but it seemed like it lasted for 2 mins, when in reality it was like 25seconds. I def felt that my life was in danger, they were yelling "kick his ass" all these factors made me do what I did. This isn't the first time this has happened to me (getting jumped for my skateboard when I was younger). My neighborhood isn't too bad, but it has its bad parts. I don't always carry a firearm where I go, only when I go to shady places by myself for situations just like this one, even though I don't have a CC permit, I'd rather be armed and not die than die. Pulling out a pistol is the LAST option, and I ran out of options. To those that wouldn't have done what I have (from the other board that someone linked me to) are idiots. You would rather lose your $3500 bike, and get the snot beat out of you, and not only that, but lose your dignity? Forget that. Those guys got what they deserved, they were lucky that I'm a quick thinker and I didn't shoot one of them. I hope they learned their lesson. In a way, I'm sort of glad it happened to me and not to some poor old man or something, I was prepared and these guys underestimated me.

This will make me think twice about riding through dark parking lots.

Wow, crazy situation! Now I see why you didn't call the cops. :)

Again, congrats on having the good presence of mind and getting all your options lined up.

Now move to america where they let you CCW!
