As t3h wifey and i were going over tactical home defense plans today - i noticed that a rather large weight difference from my 1300 defender and 870 security

1300 defender is stock right outa da box 18" bbl = 7.0 lbs empty

870 security has surefire forend and speedfeed 3 stock 18" bbl = 8.5 lbs empty

i even took the batteries out of the surefire forend before weighing them on a digital scale

1.5 pounds doesnt sound like much until you hold it in a firing position for extended periods of time

the interweb provided these weights for comparison:

1300 defender = Weight (Empty): 6.9 lbs

870 express = Weight (Empty): 7.5 lbs

590 milspec = Weight (Empty): Not Available

Thats the price you pay for having a steel reciever over an aluminum one. Its also why you less steel framed pisols and more alloy and polymer guns.

BTW.......my Winchester 97 tench gun repro(all steel, 20in barrel) weights more than my 28in barreled CZ semi auto with an alloy reciever.

I have had a 28 in barrel Franchi in my hands that weighed 5.9 pounds. That winchester is around 8.5, which is not bad since I had a very old(1950s) FN Browning shotgun that weighed 11lbs once I took the wood off and put a synthetic stock on it. I carried it around hunting for a year, and sold it as fast as it would go out the door.

In a home defense gun the weight isn't a real factor other than it's less painfull to pratice with the heavier gun. If the gun is used in a HD scenerio the last thing on your mind will be the weight of the gun wether it be 12 ounces or 12 pounds.
