I'm really interested in getting a magazine fed bolt action sniper type rifle.

Sig is far too expensive, so I was looking at Savage. What are your opinions? Anything like the Savage?

Savage is inexpensive and good. For the money they are one hell of a gun.

Other than that I like the Howa 1500 action alot

But of course being me I have to say "custom Mauser". I almost bought a commercial 98 action in the white the other day. But I like my bolt guns in wood and never really liked tactical bolt guns, although I shot a Steyr once and almost creamed...the 376 steyr be a fine round.
savage make a nice rifle, accurate out of the box, nice trigger

also look at the remington 700p series
The Tikka T3 tactical is another gun to check out. A bit pricier than the savage but just as accurate and optional 5 and 10 round mags. Rem 700's are ok at best. accuracy wise. The best thing about them is the action which is a very good place to start a custom, you can re chamber a 700 fairly cheaply with a match quailty barrel from lilja, kreiger, hart, schnieder, shillen or douglas just to name a few and a match trigger by jewel, shillenor timney and stock are pretty easy to add. If you want to do it this way a used 700bdl is the way to go 200-300$ at a pawn shop, have the action trued and then build it as you can piece by piece until you have what you want. A totally custom gun you can be proud of for around 2000$ all said and done, thats with a quailty optic on it. 1200-1500$ with out scope.

There was actually a used Savage .223 bolt action rifle. Composite stock. Also had I think Tasco varmit scope with bullet drop compensation.

They wanted $379 for it though that was a little pricey used.

Get a .270 I hunt with a winchester bolt action. Great gun to use as a sniper gun with the right supporting features.

Matt
recently got a savage tactiCOOL rifle package.

it's essentially their 10FP rifle with a killer leupold scope (that i priced out at around $600!!!!)

rifle package came out to around $1300.

nice heavy barrel. short throw. included a harris bipod.

and it's in 308...

very evil looking black rifle... ;)

only thing i dont like is the internal box magazine that at first i had a hard time loading.

any one here like m24s:?:
The m24 is a good gun that the army screwed up. It would be much better if the idiot who decided to go with a long action so that it could be converted to 300 win pretty much by just changing the barrel;which is never going to happen; had kept his mouth shut. Not only is the long action slower to cycle, but depending on your build and shooting style some shooters must raise off the stock to cycle the action otherwise the bolt hits them in the face, not a good thing when engaging multiple moving target, especially when they shoot back. They should have just stole the marines m40 design, which has been around since vietnam, and everything would have been fine. There is just no need for a long action for a 7'62 nato, leave it to the army to make things complicated.
The M21 was more versatile and lighter anyway. I'm not a big fan of the M24. I'd rather not carry a rifle into combat that weighs 17 pounds, only holds 5 rounds, and is slow to reload. I'd trade off a little bit of accuracy for semi-auto and a 20rnd box mag.
it would only be liked by a sharpshooter or sniper cause of its accuracy and the 1 shot 1 kill thing it sould be uesful in the desert because if its long range and other stuff but....................... the m82 HAS EXEEDING a mile RANGE!
whats with the M in M16 i mean come on! model 16?what the ****
I would have to say that shooting a .50 was by far not the most pleasant experience of my life.
