My .38 has seen better days and in anticipation of a generous tax man I've been shopping for a new revolver. Someone I would consider knowledgeable about this subject told me that it was possible to fire .40 S&W out of a 10mm revolver, only much later did it occur to me to ask this- Is it possible to use both 10mm and 40 S&W ammo out of a .41 mag revolver, or would I both ruin the pistol and never be able to high five anyone again?

You can fire a .40 in a 10mm. But a .41 mag case is .435 with a .410 bullet
while .40/10mm is .425 case with a .400 bullet/ plus 40/10 are rimless cases, so you have to run moon clips.

The only 10mm revolver that I know about is S&W 610

bah, though it would be cool if a pistol were compatible with three different calibers. guess I'll stick with a .357 as a replacement, as I don't trust my original revolver to operate safely after surviving a fire. plus the grips are all melty too...

You could get a SW 686 or one of my favorites the 627 V-Comp and have the cylinder cut of moon clips. A buddy of mine does this and runs anything with a .335 to .357 bullet, so 9mm, 9x21. 38 super 9x23 .38 spl .357 mag

610 is a great revover, and moon clips and full moon clips make loading really fast. I'd get one for the "cool factor." So you can say...you dont have one!

Years back there was a cylinder conversion available for the S&W 19 that would let you chamber any .38/.357/9mm cartridge without using full/half-moon clips. IIRC, the ejector star went nearly half-circle around the cartridge and grabbed the rebated rim of the 9mm. Somehow it would move out of the way on a conventional rimmed round and come into grab the non-rimmed one. It was stupidly expensive though, like 2x the cost of the gun. It got a lot of play in the early 80's when it seemed like outright handgun bans would happen. If you could only get one, one that would chamber multi-calibers seemed practical.
