My SKS is in serious need of being re-blued. What's the best way to do this?

Take it to a gunsmith. Dont try cold blue since it doesnt work worth a damn and smell like shit. I only use it for small touch ups.

I reblue guns and its labor intensive and most people dont have the equipment, experience, and knowledge to do it.

You could gun kote it but unless its a chinese or yugo it will kill the value more.

I used the cold blueing stuff from a local gun store. Just sanded down a little of the rust and applied it in a few coats. Didn't turn out bad at all, but there wasn't much serious rust, just a little surface stuff.

I don't have a rust problem unless I get it wet, it's just the blueing is starting to look a little ratty.

This SKS definitely saw action somewhere sandy. I'm thinking probably in Kazhakhstan, since the reciever cover was extremely worn on the front edge where the bolt hits it and the stock was FULL of sand when I took it apart.

I'm planning on getting one of those new TAPCO stocks with the SAW pistol grip and M4-style collapsable stock soon. It's got a cheap ATI Dragunov stock on it now.

Those tapco stocks suck. They make the gun extremely front heavy and unbalanced. My roomie has one on a yugo and he is putting the wood back on it.

Cold Blue tends to attract more rust than it prevents. It just colors the metal, and not protect it. Plus it wears fast and smells like a dead mules ass.

Already sanded down, sounds like the hard part is done...

Anyways, the spots i fixed looked much better afterwords but it wasn't a complete match to the healthy parts of the barrel. So if thats important to you consider the pro job I guess.

What early 1900's look? It would have to be american since the ruskies didnt start parking any guns until the late 40's.

Americans didnt start doing it until the 1930's

Bluing is just better looking IMHO.
