I'm sure there will be a tittywop

My wife fired my G29 10mm auto for the first time this past weekend. She didn’t do to bad. She wanted to try the gun out, and who am I to say no?! Anyhow, she isn’t a huge fan of it because of the recoil and the fact that she has a really difficult time racking the slide. Being able to rack the slide is important. What would you guys recommend that would be a nice pistol for her in self defense? I’m thinking G28 or G26. I really don’t want a revolver. Anyone have any experience with the G28? I know I know, make her shoot everything first, but I would like to hear other suggestions first. Seems like I live in gun hell. No one wants to suggest anything, offer up any information, or even sell you something. Makes me realize why all these places are closing up shop.

Well I would look at a coouple of guns if I were you.

Bersa Thunder Series, specifically the 380. They are very very inexpensive and very pleasant to shoot. They are very concealable as well. Much like a Walther PPK only about 250 bucks cheaper.

Glock 36. If she has done well with a Glock then this one would be a nice carry gun for her.

Has she tried anything other than Glock? I know a lot of women who are very found of 1911s because of their large caliber and slim grip.

I'm a glock person (well, specifically, a Glock 21 man) myself, that is because it fits me and does what I want it to do every single time. Let her expand her horizons... Hell, she might even outshoot you. :) (women are better shooters than men in some scenarios)

She tells me that she likes how the Glock sits in her hands. Yes, she is gripping it properly. We have tried a Taurus, but I don't think she racked it ... pushy sales people suck. Her only complaint of my G29 was the recoil (understandable on 200+gr) and not being able to rack the slide herself. Once locked back, she can insert the magazine and release the slide, but even that is difficult for her. I'm a Glock person, and have enjoyed what I have owned. I have tried others, I just keep coming back. I'm willling to let her try other's and buy what feels good to her, I just need a place to start. I want to keep the caliber a reasonable size for defense. We both want to keep the gun a sub compact size.

So, low to moderate recoil
Easy to rack the slide
Subcompact

I'll give the same response as in OT.
Have her try the G19. It's one of the smaller Glock pistols, but still large enough for you to enjoy shooting.
Plus you can do a lot more shooting with a 9mm than a 10mm. I don't currently know the going rate on 10mm ammo, but it can't be pretty.
If she can't rack the G19 slide (which I'm sure she can), shoot the shit out of it, till the spring weakens.:D

Glock 32 or 32ACP?

Id say the Glockk 32 in 357 SIG is going to be a handfull since its snappier than a 40 S&W abnd will be as much to shoot as a 10mm.

As for 32ACP its the bottom of the barrel for viable defense cartridges. Id stick with a 380ACP since shot placement is not as key as with the 32ACP. But if you do go for 32ACP there is a TON of nice Walther PPs out there. I have one I loaned my mom for self defense since she cant take much more with her arthritis.

Go to a gun shop, with counter people that you know and trust, that has a really wide selection of guns. Tell her to have fun, you'll meet her back in 30-40 minutes.

When you get back, she'll have found the gun that she likes best. Worry about caliber and such later, for her next gun. :)

Haven't found one within an hours drive yet ... and I'm running out of listings in the phone book that aren't people selling out of their house as gun smiths.

The gun i was 'planning on getting for my g/f' (it's really for me...) is a CZ-82 since it recently became C&R eligible. 12 shot all steel .380 for ~$200. they're reportedly reliable and accurate, the two most important features of any weapon, in that order :)

As soon as my soon-to-be wife and I get a place together, I'm going to get her a revolver. I tried getting her into automatic pistols, but she just doesn't dig them (other than the .22 P38), but I don't want her shooting a .22. Probably in .38 special.

Honestly, you should let her shoot a revolver, if you are getting her a gun, then it needs to be one she likes. My g/f has a problem with the slide on my .40, but my Ruger P89DC is much easier for her to handle as far as racking the slide, my mom on the other hand loves revolvers because she has issues with racking the slide. My moms carry weapon is a S&W Model 66 4" revolver. Don't discount them because you don't like them, let her try it and decide for herself.

Good news for you guys ... and me.

This weekend I'm taking my wife up to a new(ish) range and gun store the next state over. I'm going to take your advice and at least get her to shoot a revolver. Specifically the Taurus .357/.38. What good is this forum if I don't at LEAST resarch some of the advice given here.

I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Its not me that doesn't like them ... sheesh. Everyone is quick to say I don't like revolvers.

Only problem is that alot of these that are coming in are not very good condition wise. They either look like hell and are still tight, or are shot out but look good. Make sure you handle the one you buy or try to find a used CZ83. They made them for a long time in 9mm makarov.
