As reported by KTVA 11 (AK):

Man shoots threatening moose

Associated Press
Article Last Updated: 05/31/2007 03:57:42 PM AKDT

Alaska wildlife state troopers say a North Pole musher will NOT be cited for shooting a moose that threatened to charge him. The cow was defending a calf from a sled dog that had pulled loose from a chain in the yard of musher Jonah Lilley. Wildlife Trooper Dennis Roe says Lilley shot the moose in the head Monday with a .22-caliber rifle from about 20 feet away.

Roe says the cow and calf -- which was probably was less than a week old -- walked into Lilley's dog lot and "riled the dogs up." He says one of Lilley's bigger huskies pulled its anchor out and ran to the moose. Lilley went into his house for the gun, came back out and fired it into the air to scare the moose. Roe says the cow turned away from the dog toward Lilley, and when it moved toward him, he shot it.

Roe says the loose dog grabbed the calf by its hind end and seriously injured it. Roe says that when he arrived, the calf was alive but could not stand up, so he shot it. He says the shooting of the cow appeared to be justified. The cow moose was salvaged by a charity. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game took the calf carcass for research. Wildlife officials say cow moose aggressively protect their young and neither calves nor cows should be approached, especially at this time of year.

Note: Once again proof that the .22 can and does work effectively. Of course shot placement is key as with any caliber round.

How about the guy get control of his dog.
With a 1000lb + animal staring him down i would be the dog was the last thing on his mind.

A couple years ago in muzzleloader season I had a close incounter; at one point she was with in 3'; with a sow black bear wityh cubs. I been in a few ify situations in my life but that was the worst, I'm not afraid to say i was damn near touching cloth.

i duno man. i bet that dog would fight. especially if it broke free of its leash to confront it in the first place.

From the story, I guess it attacked the baby but if the mom wouldn't have been killed then the dog would have been kept away and eventually realized that it can't do anything more than bark and run around like an idiot. Dogs are smart enough to stay out of the way and not fight a losing battle.

Sucks that he was wearing a shirt that would provoke a moose ;)

But in all seriousness, if I was walking my dog and a moose felt intimidated by my dog or whatever and started coming towards us, I'd first fire a warming shot towards the moose... And well, if it came any closer I'd do my best to mimic what the man did.

One shot with a .22 is damn impressive. He had to of been using custom ammo.

He wasn't walking his dog, he was at his own house. He was outside, saw the moose and went inside to get a gun. He could have grabbed his dogs and went inside. The moose (mooses?) would have walked through the yard and been on their way. It is common knowledge to stay the hell away from a moose, especially with a baby.
