BELCHERTOWN - The law caught up Tuesday with a man who allegedly impersonated a U.S. Marshal and flashed a gun at a local restaurant last October.
Richard Fafard, 47, of Palmer, pleaded innocent in Eastern Hampshire District Court to charges of impersonating a police officer, defrauding a restaurant and assault with a dangerous weapon (handgun). His case was continued to Feb. 1.
According to a police report placed in the court file, Fafard walked into McCarthy's Pub on Oct. 27 and claimed to be a federal marshal after quickly showing not a badge but his driver's license to owner Janice McCarthy.
Fafard told McCarthy that he had eaten some bad food there and gotten sick the previous night. He demanded his money back.
McCarthy told police she was nervous and initially believed his claims. She showed him some receipts from the previous night's sales and then asked for his license and wrote his name down.
Meanwhile, Fafard started to light a cigarette.
A patron at the bar told him it was illegal to smoke in restaurants in Massachusetts.
Fafard replied, "I know, I am a federal marshal." He then pulled his jacket aside and displayed a gun holstered at his shoulder.
"That's right," he said, "it's a Glock."
McCarthy then gave Fafard $25, and he left. Witnesses watched him climb into a blue convertible and wrote down his license plate number.
Police traced the plate back to Fafard, who lives at 1588 North Main St. in Palmer. He was subsequently summoned to court.
