As you probably know by now, a new Assault Weapons Ban bill is in committee at the moment, and will probably pass the house, might pass the senate, and be put on GWB's desk for signature to become Law of the Land.

It is MUCH more restrictive than the last one, there will be no more transfer of AWBs to your kids of friends, no more normal capacity magazines, and basically any rifle made after the black powder era could be construed as an "assault rifle".

I personally believe that if this bill becomes law, it is really the beginning of the end for gun ownership in this country. I have hopes that my kids will be able to enjoy the same freedoms we do now, but if this passes, I think that in a few decades we will be no better off than England or Australia, NRA or no NRA.

Here are some ways you can fight it.

Here is a link to find your elected representatives. Email them a polite, short, FIRM note to say that you absolutely oppose HR 1022 and that you and other law abiding gun owners will be watching their votes closely.

You can call them with the number provided at that link as well. There is also a neat feature in which you cna have an actual letter hand delivered. I just did that to all 3 of my reps for a bit over $15.00.

Sample Letter to Representatives (1)

To The Honorable ......:

I, and many other hunters and firearms enthusiasts, will be watching closely to see how you respond to HB 1022, authored by Mrs. McCarthy of NY to reauthorize the assault weapons ban of 1994.

You have always been portrayed as a firm advocate of sportsmen and the second amendment. It is now time to demonstrate whether you stand with us or against us. No excuse for failing to vote against this bill will be acceptable.

We look forward to your support.

Sincerely,

Sample letter to representatives (2)

Honorable [INSERT YOUR REP'S NAME],

I am a constituent in [INSERT YOUR COUNTY OR DISTRICT] and I wanted to make you aware of my opinion concerning HR1022 "Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007".

It is my opinion that the proposed bill is neither viable, nor constitutional. The second amendment has been trampled and re-written enough already; We The People want no more editing to this truly great document, specifically our Bill of Rights.

The statistics show that such laws affect the legal gun owner, not the criminal. The proposed ban would have no effect on crime, and would further inhibit law abiding citizens from defending their families.

Furthermore, I do not see anything in the wording of the bill, other than the title, that concerns protection for law enforcement officers.

I have entrusted you to take my voice to The Hill, and I am trusting that you will hear my concerns.

Your Constituent,

They dont give a shit about our rights...

Seems, all they want is to get elected again the next year...
Uh, yup. But it only costs you .39 plus the cost of paper & envelope. Mine is sitting by the door to take down to the post office in the AM. Who knows? The new turd we have down there might actually think for himself for a nanosecond.

Ok, it's a pipe dream but....

Jeebus... :(

I'm ashamed to say but I am just now finding out about HR1022 today, like 5 minutes ago.
I recall seeing reference to this in my travels but not once have I actually stopped to read what all it's about, assuming it wasjust a refresh of the Clinton era ban.

Crap I read about what they want to do in this one though and OMG what the fuck!!!1!

I'm on the record via NASIOC having had then (during the initiaon of the ban) and afterward little to no problem with the Clinton era ban.
Yes, bans are generally for the lose and the Clinton one was largely silly toward what they denied but I coul live with it.

This HR1022 though, no damn way. :|

Seriously I cannot believe these people have had the nerve/balls/gall to even suggest this!
Did you see the part about shotguns?!

Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007 (Introduced in House) - HR 1022 IH
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:h1022:

This is just ridiculous, insulting even.
Anyway yes I'm late to the party but I'm on board and thank you Jamz for the assist, I'll be taking time tonight to begin my own letter writing campaign.

P.S. - There is strong historical irony in that name McCarthy.

Indeed, Janq, but now she has a Democratically controlled committee, house, and senate. Her chances get a lot better. I'm hoping it's overreacting, but better safe than sorry, in my book.

I hear ya about McCarthy.
