I'm in the military so I'm familiar with guns...well the Beretta 9mm, M-16 and 12 gauge but I am out of the loop on everything else.

I currently have a Mossberg 12 ga and an old .22. I've been looking at getting a pistol now that I don't live on base. My budget (around $400) is going to be the biggest factor but hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction. Suprised to see so many Subaru guys :)

I have been looking at the Sigma and the pf-9 ,both had some less than great reviews.
I just got done looking at some reviews of the M&P. Sounds like it might be a winner. Thanks for the recommendation. Just have to decide between 9mm or .40

Whatever you do, don't buy a "cheap" gun. Buy a high quality pistol for a "cheap price".

Ever think about getting a used pistol? I have a couple glocks that I bought used... They were pretty much new when I got them so I it worked out just fine. :D

You think about getting an XD-9 or XD-40? Those are in your price range... You might even be able to get a glock if you pay juuuuuust a little bit more.

The main diff between the XD and the Glock is the angle of the grip (as well as the safety features on the XD). I'd take the reliability of the XD or Glock over the Sigma anyday.

looking at the reviews on the M&P, I've ruled out the Sigma of pf-9. I'd like a Sig but they are just a little out of my range. I thought about a used gun but I'm not familiar with the procedures for transferring or anything else required. I'm not in a big hurry so I'll keep my options open.

Look at Steyr my friend. They have been around for abot 350-400 bucks and are a very very high quality gun designed by the guy who helped Gaston Glock make his guns.

Also the EAA Witness is a fine gun as is the CZ75. You can suually find them all over online.

Alright, just got back from the store. I liked the feel of the XD and the safety features. The Glock 19 was nice but the lack of safety features makes me hesitant since I'm used to have a manual safety on the Beretta. Those are the only two that I got a good look and feel for. They should be getting CZ's soon so I'll check those out. Thanks for the suggetions guys

For defense they are the best I have ever seen. It take a little while to get used to them after using standard 3 dot sights, but once you get used to them they are wunderbahr.

As for your glock type safety systems.....they are a bit worrysome until you really look into how it works. I have seen a torture test where they dropped a fully loaded G17 with one in the chamber from over 100 feet and it didnt go off. For defense your only worry is make sure your holster covers the trigger area well and to just watch and pay attention when reholstering it.

BTW.....if you are used to Beretta type safety and go with a CZ I reccomend the CZ75 BD or the compact with the decocker. Both have the decocker type safety. The standard has the 1911 type manual safety only. You wil notice that they are heavier since they are all steel, but they are soft shooters and dead reliable and accurate out of the box. Only problems I have ever seen are that the factory sometimes puts too light of recoil springs in them but thats a 4 dollar fix.

The local shop should be getting the CZ's in soon so I'll take a look at them. I just want to make sure I don't put any holes in my leg. After tinkering with the XD I feel alot more comfortable with the safety features, just need to make sure the wife is also.
