I am thinking about getting an H&K USP .40 - anyone have any input on the gun and good or bad points?

Compact or full size?

I have a .40 compact and its rifle like accuracy to I hit pie pans from 60-70 yards without much trouble all the time. Never had a failure to feed or fire and I use cheap reloads in it.

I don't recall if it was the full-size or compact I rented at the range a day or two ago, but I was quite impressed with it, except for one thing... It may be due to the fact that it was a rental, but the mag release is right where my finger sits, and it was very "sensitive". As in, the mag dropped out on more than one occasion, simply because my finger bumped it the wrong way while firing.

Other than that, very nice pistol.

I've had a HK USP .45 Full Size forever...I love it...not one problem. It's still my go to pistol in my group of bang bang toys.

my friend just picked up a USP Compact .40 - I can group pretty damn well with it and it's very fun to shoot. My only complaint is the mag release (I have little baby pussy fingers)

I used to carry a full size 40 DAO at work. If you can, avoid the DAO at all costs - super heavy, super long trigger pull.

Other than that, it's a big, nearly indestructible, very accurate gun. The grip is a bit too vertical for my taste, but I got used to it. I'd buy a Glock before an HK only because they fit me better. The HK is probably a superior gun.
