Depending on your state laws, if you can get someone to give you a pistol as a gift, you won't have to "purchase" it.
I'd start with something like a P-22, shoots cheap, has a manual of arms similar to it's bigger brothers, looks cool, and is fun to shoot. You can shoot a hell of a lot for $10.00, and the more you shoot, the better you get!
