I have been thinking about a long range rifle as well, but really don't have a lot of experience with rifles and don't know idealy where to start. I'm impressed with the .458 SOCOM, is this available in the M1A?
Hmmmm, I enjoy the .308, and have used my cousins M1A, but would just like a little more ... seems I always want a little more. :mrgreen:ORCA said:Go with the JAE100 sexiness!

I think all M1A's are .308. I've never seen them in a dif caliber, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Its not exactly short range, I honestly can't remember the last time I tried to shoot something more then 150 yards out. If your punching holes in paper from 1,000 yards then sure, but for hunting (mainly what I would use it for) I don't think it would be a problem. I'm just looking for other platforms that aren't the AR. Nothing wrong with an AR, just looking at "options". But thank you for the information, I may end up with just a 308 anyhow since I have some positive experience with it.Adler said:458 Socom is for the AR platform only and is not a long range round. It is a heavy, slow moving, short to medium range manstopper. If you want a long range gun then you are looking for something in 308, 6.8, 6.5 Grendel and so on. Personally I am a FAL or G3 type guy for a fullsize battle rifle.
