I don't think I have a favorite round, they are all good for various applications.

I like .22 for fun, 9mm for defensive pistol practice (and .22 for this sometimes as well), .38 and .357 for carry, .44 mag for fun, and .45 for auto pistol carry.

Rifles, I like .22 for fun and small game, 5.56, .308, 30-06, I like 'em all.

I can tell you what I don't like... Calibers that are too hard to find, and .40.

A lot of people think that .40 is the best of both worlds- hitting power of a 45 but takes up less space. I think it's the worst of both worlds- too much recoil for what it delivers.

I'm pretty much with Jamz, and Robert DeNiro from Ronin, on this subject.
You put the tools in the toolbox for the job at hand... :p

HA, I was just thinking of DiNero in Ronin when I wrote that. :)

I don't have a "favorite gun" either.

I have a favorite to carry at the moment, but that's only because it's so easy. Not my favorite to shoot.

Pistol - .40cal, mostly small compact guns, plenty of power, not so bad on recoil, easy to hide

Rifle - .22-250, I don't own one yet, but the little round rocks my world.

Shotty - 12 gauge size 8, 1 1/4 ounce, 4 dram. Skeet killers!

Anyone have any input as to the 30-06 round. Right now I have a Remington 700 in .308, but I've been thinking about letting it go for the aforementioned 30-06. Any thoughts?
What are you planning on doing with it?

As a hunting round, it works well. If you just want a shooter, I'd keep the .308.

the 308 is basically an "improved" 308. When the military designed the T65(7.62x51mm) round it was nothing more than a shortened 30M2(30-06). They used improved powders to shorten it 12mm and got nearly identical performance with it. So it will not give you much improvement in the 150-170gr variety, but if you use heavier 190 range bullets you might get better performance.

Im really in love with the 6.5x55mm swede mauser round. Its more accurate and perfect for medium sized game.

ppl that really love the 30/06 r reloaders, because they can shoot .22 power ammo at small game not tearing it up, and save money on powder, then shoot a magnum powerhouse load that afternoon at a bear on the way home. Its a great case.
