OKLAHOMA CITY — A candidate for state superintendent of schools said Thursday he wants thick used textbooks placed under every student's desk so they can use them for self-defense during school shootings.

"People might think it's kind of weird, crazy,"said Republican Bill Crozier of Union City, a teacher and former Air Force security officer."It is a practical thing; it's something you can do. It might be a way to deflect those bullets until police go there."

Crozier and a group of aides produced a 10-minute video Tuesday in which they shoot math, language and telephone books with a variety of weapons, including an AK-47 assault rifle and a 9mm pistol. The rifle bullet penetrated two books, including a calculus textbook, but the pistol bullet was stopped by a single book.

Crozier said the demonstration shows that a student could effectively use a textbook as protection in a school shooting.

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesman was skeptical.

"He probably needs to take a look at some ballistics tests,"Lt. Pete Norwood said."There are some rifles not even Webster's Dictionary will stop."

Crozier said he got the idea after the April 1999 shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. The idea gained momentum after a December 1999 school shooting in Fort Gibson when a 13-year-old boy wounded five fellow students. Crozier noted that a bullet lodged in books in one student's backpack.

"You don't know where they're going to happen. You don't know when they're going to happen. There ought to be some kind of plan to react to it,"Crozier said.

Six girls and a principal were killed in a recent string of shootings in Colorado, Wisconsin and at an Amish schoolhouse in Pennsylvania.

Crozier faces incumbent Sandy Garrett, a Democrat, in the Nov. 7 general election. A spokeswoman for Garrett's campaign, Kimberly Hawkins Sanders, said Garrett had no comment on Crozier's idea

Well, I dont know about yall but I have shot phonebooks and school books a few times with everything from a .22 short to a rifled shotgun slug and I can tell you they dont stand up well even to FMJ 9mm rounds.

You can see here even from mid range with bird shot the "Gay pages" Yea... we have the Atlanta Gay pages here.... Anyways It did not stand up to a 12Ga even with bird shot.

I guess its better than nothing... Or you could do one of bruces cut out books and hide your own Seacamp .32 pistol in there..

I saw this on the televison. Why not get armed people at the entrances of schools and a few inside i'd liek to see a kid pull some shit when theres a guy with an m16 patrolling. As jamz mentioned earler about the feeling nervous part yeah maybe armed guards would make people feel nervous if they are pussies anyways. But i think people would get used to it and feel safer eventaully.

uh... yea... Great idea there weisser, anger the anti gunners even more. They will say "This would not be necessary if we had banned guns in the first place!" But then again, they will find any excuse to say that...

oh yea, btw STOP..... Grammer time!

Anyways I would not be apposed to arming teachers that are qualified to handle fire arms, I had three teachers in high school that where in the military, one in Rangers I went to the shooting range with him twice as well as another teacher who wanted to learn to shoot. Yes I talked about guns alot in high school, and its a shame how some people think you are going to shoot up the school the next day when you tell them you have an AR-15, M4 and the OMGZ! TEH MOST EVILIST GUN EEEEEEVORZ! AK-47!!! Anyways like police they should have to do all the stuff and have a concealed weapons license in order to possess one. I think thats a totaly fair and feasible.

I know this idea will NEVER happen, God forbid teachers be armed at our schools! What if one gets mad!!! they will have a gun in there hand! Trust me, it will be said But if there going to snap they would go home and come back with a AK-47...

I do know when I was in high school we had an armed cop there at all times.
^lol I mispeallead school the first time, I be a gud greadumtate :)

And also about making anti gunners mad about getting armed guards in schools well whos to say a psychopath has to use a gun in a school killing? What if he were to have a knife or a bombs strapped to him.

That's the issue when you create a "gun-free" zone like a school with no other real controls other than the rulebook. It creates a zone in which you pretty much guarantee that the only people who will be unarmed are the good guys. Makes no sense to me.
