So anyone have recommendations for the best place to buy in the Bay Area (preferably south bay)? A small shop? or should I order online and get it shipped to a local shop? How are the prices at the bigger places, like Reed's?

It's not in the south bay but City Arms in Pacifica is my favorite place. They have a nice selection and good customer service. Their prices are pretty fair overall.

The only SJ place I've been to is the Gun Exchange. I felt like they just wanted my money. Once they got it they were rude and unhelpful. Maybe if you're in their good ol boy system you'll have a better experience.

Bought my Walther at City Arms, no bullshit, good folks. The only other place I know on the peninsula is Tabor's Shooters supply in San Bruno, they have a proficent gunsmithing department, they brought my mom's lever action back from the dead.

20 years in a damp storage closet = rust-o-rama, it looked more like a brown stick than a rifle.

online...

all but one of my stuff was bought online or out of state.

my first SIG was bought as traders in san leandro...

second was done by cheking out gunsamerica.com. found a selller with a new 229. for $600. $20 to ship and like $50 in FFL fees (5 years ago). even then a new 229 at traders was over $700.

if you need an FFL check around. i know a good one in milpitas.

they charge $25 for the DROS fees. then they tag on like $20-$50 per item.

if you buy at a store, you will still have to pay the DROS fees, but not their FFL fees since, they already have the firearm...

good luck...

In the south bay, Reed's is the place to go. The price is good...a few dollars less then other shops. Do your research before buying from Reed's, they recommended something that turned out to be a POS. They will take care of you after you talk to the right person.
