I know it's not likely, but things happen... Like with the Katrina thing... They even had warning and look what happened. What if a giant earthquake 10.0 or something were to hit the bay area (where I live)... Rogue asteroid, etc, etc...

Panic ensues, riots happen, people fighting and killing for food/water...

How ready are you?

Sure, I may sound paranoid, but I'd rather be paranoid than dead (or my family dead).

I tend to keep a cache of water in the garage (about a months worth), lots of batteries (hundreds of AAs, lots and lots of D's, and other various sizes that fit my gizmos and such). I have dry and canned foods (like soups, beans, pastas, dry meats, etc)... Lots of blankets, about 10, 10'x10 cammo nets (you never know)... More ammo than I could ever shoot alone (unless it came down to me shooting 10k+ rounds by myself), and an abundant supply of firearms and tools/knives.

We have bikes with tires that can't be punctured... several cars including a van and truck and a couple motorcycles.

I think I'm good for a nuclear disaster actually.

How about you guys?

I've got several bottles of Listerine in small and large bottle sizes.
That way I can use it to clean up their scratches and abrasions of hawt librarians just after giving them CPR with a blow of minty fresh life giving breath. :D

I have my 'shack' that is stocked in firearms, ammunition, dried food/MREs/survival rations, water and water purification tablets, clothing, entertainment, and more importantly, explosives.

Check out www.zombiehunters.org

There, 'zombies' are a euphemism.

I have nearly a lifetime supply of 70's era Hustler magazines and a half tractor trailer full of cigarettes and mountain dew. I'm set.

Actually, I have enough firearms, ammo and relaoding supplies to last a while. Probably have 3-4 weeks of food in the house, and 80 gallons of water stored up.

About the only natural disaster we get here are ice storms that kill power for weeks.

I have all kinda stuff stocked up MRE's, lots of medical supplys, water, lots of weapons, tons of ammo, parts for all guns, flashlights a few boxes of Surefire batterys (God there expensive) and a NBC MOP suit I got from work with my M-40 and M-17 gasmasks that I got for the hell of haveing them and cleaning out houses along with a few spare filters.

Also keep my SHTF bag ready and when I go camping, I have some MRE's with med kit and gun parts along with a camelback water system built into it.

not sure what I would ever need it for but if the need arizes I will be fairly ready.

Do you really know how to use all the stuff you have stashed away in the event that you would actually have to survive for an unknown length of time?

Think about that.

I see this SHTF/dooms day stuff in every forum. People listing allllllll kinds of shit they have but don't have a fucking clue how to really survive with it.

So lets take this a little farther.

Bruces' natural disaster hits. You have no eletric, no water source, no food, no contact with the outside world for however long could be 2 days could be 2wks.

you have canned foods and pastas. How do you cook the pasta? Where do you cook? what do you use for the heat source. In a city most ppl don't have a yard to build a fire, and if you do what do you burn for fuel?

Here's a question, where do you go to the restroom? no water no flushey flushey.

You have med supplies but can you use them beyond putting on a bandage if you had to. Can you do basic first aid,CPR , stop bleeding, apply a splint, set a bone, suture/staple or just plain figure out what is wrong with some1?

MRE's have heaters if they even need them at all.

Take a shit outside or in a bucket..

Fire? live on 10 acres of land covered in trees.

water, have a well and a generator along with lots of fuel and oil for the off road toys.

I basicly grew up in an animal hospital that my dad owned and was a technician there for some time as well I have learned quite a few things about all types of injurys, broken bones and even gunshot trama and CPR. In case your wondering... No I have never given mouth to mouth to a dog working there... I have been asked before...

I enjoy outdoor survival, me and a friend would go camping all the time with the least we could take enough to fit into a backpack.

Country boys have an advantage, I was looking more to Bruces city idea. No trees, no well. In the city your limited.

Jerermy,

I live in the suburbs... and have rolling hills with water and trees about 500 yards away... Lots of Mt ranges near by...

We cook the food with fire... Lots of stuff to burn around here... Lots of dry wood, etc. I'm an outdoorsman, so I know what needs to be done.

But yeah... taking a crap in a bucket = no problem.

I wasn't trying to be a dick I just got to thinking about it and can to the conclusion that it would really suck to be in a city if something like that happened. I don't know what i would do in that situation.

I life in BFE, I got a lake for water and fish 100yds away and farms with steers, hogs and chickens for miles in all directions no to mention game animals and enough scotch and cigars to barter with. So being "stranded" here wouldn't be that bad.

And Daniel, I see your San Andreas Fault, and raise you one La Palma tsunami:

The big question is where and when the next large volcanic island collapse will occur. Because these landslides all happened in the ancient past no-one has ever witnessed one. They are so rare scientists cannot be sure what the precursors will be, but of all the large volcanic islands around the world one in particular shows disturbing signs of instability. If this island collapses it would create a mega-tsunami that would race across the Atlantic and hit the east coast of the United States. Every city on the shoreline would be destroyed. From New York in the north to Miami in the south. The wave would wreak havoc for as much as 20 kilometres inland. The origin of this wave would be thousands of miles away. This mega-tsunami would come from a volcanic island off the coast of North Africa, from one of the Canary Islands. It would come from the island of La Palma. La Palma is one of the western-most islands in the Canaries. 80,000 people live here making their living from farming and tourism. There are also two volcanoes on the island, one extinct, one active. In the early 1990s a British geologist travelled to the island to study the active volcano called the Cumbre Vieja.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/horizon/2000/mega_tsunami.shtml is the main story page.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/horizon/2000/mega_tsunami_transcript.shtml is the transcript and a good read.

Yes, I am aware of the scientific controversy over La Palma relative stability, and the likelihood of this happening.
