Hey everyone, I've lurked here since the site went up... never had much reason to post until I bought my first gun this summer, a new 870 Express. Right after my CA waiting period was up I left the country for over a month, so yesterday was the first time I got to use it.

I went with a buddy and did two rounds of skeet shooting. About three quarters of the way through the second round, the gun started having trouble ejecting spent shells. I had one shell in the magazine and one in the chamber. I fired the first at a clay, pumped, and found myself with a spent shell stuck in the barrel. I closed the action and opened it again and it ejected the shell, so I thought "no biggie". Then, a few shots later, it did the same thing but the spent shell refused to budge, forcing me to leave it in there until cleaning and use my friend's gun for the rest of the round.

I've heard that the new 870 Expresses have some issues due to their being entirely machine made/not hand-finished, and for the price of the gun I expect a bit of cheapnesss. I gave it a thorough cleaning when I was done, and I plan to take it out again next saturday. If I encounter more mechanical issues, should I bring it up with the manufacturer? Lacking any tools like a dremel, is there any way for me to finish the gun by hand myself if necessary?

Sounds like your ejector might be busted. This is not unheard of. Call Remington and complain. I will say the couple latest batches of Remingtons I have been seeing are not making me very confident. Especially the ones made by Baikal. When they were imported by EAA the fit and finish were much better. I think Remington was cutting corners prior to it being acquired by Cerebus.

Are you sure you're not short stroking it?

This was my initial thought while reading your post. I would think this could more than likely be the cause since it's your first gun. I've heard of others short stroking it but not any bad ejector problems.

Thats true....you gotta really rack them pumps to get reliability. The older hammer pumps like a Win 97 are really unreliable if you try to go easy on them.

Okay, so I took it out to the range again today after giving it a thorough cleaning last weekend. No mechanical difficulties this time (I racked that bitch like my ex girlfriend), I very likely was short stroking it last weekend, but I'm keeping an eye out from now on just in case.

I just have so much crap to do in my life right now that if the gun is faulty I really don't want to have to deal with warranty issues, getting it replaced etc.

Overall though, I've been very happy with it so far. The gun fits me nice and the pump action just feels great.

There are few sounds on this earth as scary as a pump action shotgun. Well scary if you are not holding the gun, otherwise its a sexy noise. The only noise I love more is the sounds of a revolver cocking.
