Anyone here ever shot a 454 Casull? I have this gun laying around for almost two years which I have never fired yet. Just wanted to know what to expect....

Yes, I have a Taurus raging bull in 454, recoil isn't that bad *but that's just to me everyone's differnt* just use 2 hands and start off with lighter loads if your afraid.

Oh and make sure that u have a good grip and if u have to reset it after a few shots do it, cause you could break your thumb.

I am still saving money in order to buy the ammo.....

for target purposes you can shoot 45 long colt in them.
Somebody in OT posted a pic of their .454 casul in like a 2.5" barrel... if someone can fire that, I'd say that the recoil form your heavier gun should be fine.

Of course, I've never shot anyting worse than .44 mag.

I just got the 2.5" ruger 454. With the hogue grips it doesn't hurt to fire but it does have some pretty good muzzle rise. I've shot some less powerful magnum pistols that were physically larger that actually hurt more since the trigger guard would dig into my middle finger. The hogue grips on my ruger protect that area as well as contain a pad in the backstrap so no pain at all. If you're shooting unpadded grips I can give no guarantee's. ;)

Watch out for your thumb placement on your support hand. If it's placed behind the cylinder upon firing the recoil can force the cylinder edge into that thumb. I just barely got caught by it on one of my first shots through the gun and it gave the tip of my thumb a nice little blood blister. If that rear edge of the cylinder had been more of a direct hit to my thumb it could have been messy. Adjusted my grip a little and had no further problems with it.

A .480 with a 10 inch barrel would be great.
Nah 454, you can shoot 45 colt rounds when you want to take it easy and 454 is more powerful than 480 for when you want to kill something big and hairy.

That thing needs a grip on the barrel!

Actually its lighter than it looks and I can shoot it one handed.

That is pure sex.
Is that red part of the grip all padding? If so you shouldn't be to worried about taking the gun out to shoot. My ruger's only got padding in the upper part of the backstrap and that's enough to keep it relatively comfortable to shoot.

Yes, the red part is extra thick padding. I don't know how comfortable it is to fire because this gun has never been fired.....
I want a .454 casul but now the new .460XVR comes out and it fires .454casul and .45lc. .460 is the fastest wheel gun round out., I think its cool to have a gun that fires more than one kind of ammo without changing anything.

That brl on that one .454 is insanly short, WTHell thats crazy! I thought my S&W's .357 brl was to short, dang! I suppose it would be a good mountain gun for alaska if a bear sneaks up on you ,maybe. Whats a gun like that for anyway, I cant see its practicality, maybe thats why its cool? :)
And yes the jokers brl is insanly long but I bet that cannon can hit a target from a long way!!!!

my only wheel gun at the time being.

I got the 2.5" barrel 454 to be a back country bear gun in Alaska. It does loose some power off the long barrel 454's, but still a lot more powerful than a full size 44 magnum, which is the typical Alaskan bear gun.

Plus with 45 colt rounds it makes a good reliable home defense gun.

So I think it's pretty usefull.

I checked S&W's site and they list a compensated 3.5" XVR coming out. Will that have the 45/454 capability too. That would be another cool gun. Think I'd still take the ruger though, lighter by 18 oz and 6 rounds. The S&W should be easier to shoot though with the extra weight and compensator.
I was thinking of getting a S&W XVR 460 for my next revolver but don't think I would wnat the 3.5" barrel
How much can I pick up one of those short barreled Alaskan 454 pistols for?
