A .22 short can be loaded in a 10/22 and It may penatrate the skin but to do any dammage I dont think so. Those shorts are more powerfull than most people would think and they hold some power but that range and that target may not work.

oh yea btw it will not feed in it.

you looking for it to be quiet? or what?

22 Short has pretty much become a dinosaur cartridge outside of Olympic style shooting. It is not going to do more than piss off a deer and even a 22LR would only kill a deer if you were luck enought to get an eye shot, cause thats the only way it is going to get to a vital organ.

Around here the lowest power cartridge they allow for hunting is a 40S&W

I don't want it to penetrate :) Maybe I should look into .22lr "CB's".

oh and adler I've killed numerous deer with a 10/22 with behind the shoulder shots, only 1 dropped, the others I had to track for several hundred yards. But generally you're right and the deer in my area are pretty small compared to most areas, there is a dramatic difference 100 miles south of here where many boone and crockets are scored

That would have to be one sickly deer to drop with a 10/22 that doesnt shoot 22WMR.

Dont want to sound like a jerk just rather rather skeptical at that claim. I have seen deer shot with 30/30s that run for hundreds of yards. Hell I even read a story where a burglar was shot with a 22(might have been 25acp) handgun and lived long enough to strangle the shooter to death despite having a chest cavity riddled with the entire capacity of the gun.

eh, to each their own. the deer in my area weigh no more than 85-90 pounds. I'm staring at 8 right now, and I'd love to go grab my 22-250 and just not worry about it at all. But everyone says its wrong to just slaughter them :(

In many states that not even legal useing something under a .22 cal.

I droped one with my AR-15 once... one shot and it hardly ran at all.

Little more power behind that 22 slug than one out of a 10/22.

the whole point is I don't want to penetrate, I just want to annoy the deer as much as they annoy me. I'm going to go pick up a box of 22CB's and hope they have enough energy to push the bolt back on the 10/22 so I don't have to keep pumping this pellet rifle

To me thats very unethical and unsportsman like you want a kill and a clean kill at that you don't wanna just pump a bunch of 22's into them. i don't know if i should question the leagality of this. i don't wanna sound like a dick or anything but is it atleast deer season and have a license becuase i know where i'm from you can get into some deep shit doing something like you planned.

oh give me a break, they've cost me thousands, and in payback I'm looking to not hurt it and give it a little sting like it gave me. Before there were paintball guns we shot eachother with bb guns. I think a deer can handle it, which is why I asked the question, will a 22 short hurt it.

You are never going to get all of them, let alone the ones who are causing you trouble if you live in a heavily deer populated area.

Maybe give the DNR a call and see if any wildlife official has tips to keeping them away. I would imagine that there is another way.

well then contact your dnr for an alternative like Adler said or if you can get a land owners permit. do you grow crops or something on your property. my only suggestion is try to stay within the law as much as possible.

The .22 is iffy even with shorts or cb's, slingshots work great for this stuff. You can get a good 1 for under 30$ a most sporting goods stores, Very quiet and won't "harm" the deer but it will sting like hell.
