Question Looking for a first gun, want a rifle.

I want to get a rifle, nothing too crazy but something that I can keep at home and practice shooting cans across the pond etc. I would get a scope too, maybe take it hunting. What would you recommend as a reliable gun thats not a budget ball buster? And a scope to go with it?

    thanks in advance - Mike

Mini-14 or Mini-30 - solid design cheap ammo, not super expensive and harder than hell to break

Only problem with those are the expensive mags, and the fact that some guns will not shoot the cheap steel case ammo. And for the price of a Mini 14, he could buy 2 or 3 AKs or SKSs

thanks guys, i like the Ruger 10/22,

How do you guys decide on buying the gun without holding it?
I really want to try it out before spending the 400$
do shooting ranges carry rifles too or just pistols and shotguns?
    I gotta call around.

Around here, there are no ranges that rent. I just take the dive after reading lots of reviews or going in to a shop and looking at one.

A 10/22 should not cost 400 bucks. Around here they start right around 200.

Yeah, listen to Adler. 10/22's should not be any where near that price without some add on's.
